On the Silk Road, caravans stop at the edge of the Euphrates and merchants welcome them with stalls shining with bright bergamot, solar ylang-ylang and sweets scented with geranium. But the predominant scent is that of the ointments and balms. Benzoin, Peru balsam and ambrarome warm up under an incandescent sun, alongside vetiver and patchouli balls placed on cedar and guaiac wood slats.
