The tiaré, or Tahitian gardenia (Gardenia taitensis), is a fragrant, white-flowered shrub native to the South Pacific, particularly Tahiti. Known for its beautiful, star-shaped blossoms, the tiaré holds deep cultural significance in Polynesia, where it is used in traditional ceremonies and garlands, known as leis, to convey affection and honor. The flower’s placement behind the ear can signal relationship status: left for taken, right for single, and both for married. Tiaré flowers are also integral to monoi oil, a traditional Polynesian cosmetic made by infusing the blossoms in coconut oil, prized for its moisturizing properties. In perfumery, the tiaré’s intoxicating scent is cherished for its sweet, exotic fragrance, often featured in high-end perfumes and body care products.
